The Bewasi Village is located approximately 2 hours to the east of Accra. The village houses a primary school, medical clinic and well woman centre. Volunteers with teaching, social work or medical backgrounds are most needed although volunteers from all backgrounds are welcome.
Village School:
Volunteers interested in working at the school and with the village children can expect to be involved in a variety of activities ranging from teaching to organizing and participating in sports and extracurricular activities.
Currently the school holds approximately 100 children ranging from ages 4 to 12. Our Children Africa is in the process of securing funding in order to build a six classroom school and library for this community. Currently the school is built of bamboo and straw and cannot operate during days of inclement weather.
Well Woman’s Centre:
Volunteers with backgrounds in social work and medicine are most welcome to come and work at the medical clinic/Well Woman’s Centre. Here volunteers can expect to assist with family planning, reproductive health, HIV education, malaria prevention counseling and anti-malarial drug distribution. Health care workers can also expect to provide general check ups and first aid administration.
Accommodations:
Volunteers need to be aware that accommodations and living conditions in the village are quite rudimentary and perhaps not well suited for some people. There is no running water or electricity within volunteer living quarters. Volunteers are required to use a communal water pump and portable light sources at night. Also malaria is a particular concern in this area. In addition to mosquito repellant containing deet and anti-malarial drugs, mosquito nets are a must in the villages.
Other Accommodations:
Other accommodations are offered in the nearby town of Adawso located five kilometers away. Here rooms are equipped with running water and electricity.
