School Construction

Our Children Africa is currently in the process of building two schools in the Akropong District of Greater Accra. Prior to construction, over 100 children living in the surrounding area were unable to attain an education, as there was no school available within proximity of the villages. The cost of building a primary school with six classrooms and one library is $22 000 US. The schools would accommodate upwards of 150 students from various villages in the region. Currently, the school structures are built with bamboo and straw, consist of one room and hold 100 students ranging from ages 4 to 12. Due to its poor structure, the school is inaccessible during days of inclement weather.

Children in the Classroom

The new school will have six classrooms and one library, with the structure made of concrete so that the students may attend school regardless of the weather. Many of the children who will attend this school will walk a distance of 20 km each day to receive an education. By providing them with a secure structure in which to learn, we are not only eliminating one of the barriers that stand in the way of their access to basic education, but we are providing a reason for these children to become empowered through education and passionate about their ability to become active members of their respective communities.
